Regular cleaning and maintenance is the only way to preserve the colour and elegant appearance of a sailboat's wooden surfaces. Apart from regular and professional care, there is no need for more extensive treatment. However, if such delicate parts are left without care and maintenance for several years, they may require more specific methods to restore them to their original condition, such as sanding, planing, re-milling and, in the worst cases, partial or complete replacement.
If we maintain teak decks regularly, we can achieve a consistently satisfactory result without the need for drastic intervention. Regular maintenance of a boat moored on Lake Balaton means at least one, but more likely two times a year.
Wooden surfaces need constant protection from UV rays, so the protective oil layer needs to be reapplied periodically. Before the oil layer is applied, the wood is cleaned and the damaged fibres are removed by a chemical process. The oil used can be either coloured or completely transparent.
Periodic cleaning and care of regularly maintained teak covering on a 30-40 foot sailboat's cockpit takes about 4-6 hours.

Over time, wood fibres of different textures are damaged to different extents by UV rays. The teak surface becomes uneven, while the rubber seals retain their original height. This, combined with a weathered and UV-greyed surface, gives the impression of being neglected and the boat loses its elegant appearance. The same is true if the surface has been treated in an unprofessional manner, for example, if it has been previously coated with lacquer.
Careful sanding can then be used to make the surface uniform again. After sanding, the surface is cleaned and treated with oil.
This task does not seem too complicated and many people even try to solve the problem themselves. This is often followed by a gel coat repair. We've seen the work of a professional carpenter who created a beautiful surface, but didn't know anything about boats: he polished the wood into an ice rink, making it dangerous to walk on.
The current condition of the surface will have a major impact on the time required to complete the work, so we can only provide a quote after a visual inspection.
Restoring the teak deck on a 30-40 foot sailboat takes approximately 8-10 hours.

Whether you remove the dead fibres by acidizing or sanding, the wood will wear away over time and the black sealing will disappear. There is no other solution, the covering must be replaced. The same is true if the covering is made of a sandwich structure, as in the case of Bavaria models. In this case, not only the upper, thin decorative layer may be lost, but also the lower substrate layer may rot.
